  "I used to chew slippery elm - the bark, right off the tree. Come spring the bark would get nice and loose and you could slice it free without trouble. What I chewed was the fiber from inside, and that's what I put on the ball. That's what they called the foreign substance. The ball would break like hell, away from the right-handed hitters, and in on the lefties."

  Burlleigh Grimes was an infamous spitball pitcher. He chewed slippery elm increase saliva production, but the slippery elm caused skin irritation. Because of this, he woudn't shave on pitching days, and so earned the name Ol´ Stubblebeard.
