Carl Hubbell's signature pitch was the Screwball, also known as the fadeaway, inshoot or scroogie. The effectiveness of the pitch was not so much the breaking action, opposite that of the curve ball, but the change in speed, because the arm action was identical to the fast ball.

Leave us not forget that in 1933 the 'mealticket' shut out the Cards 1-0 in 18 innings in the Polo Gounds. That game is surreal by the standards of today proving you can't compare apples and cannonballs.

Carl Hubbel lost a game to the Cubs (1-0) on July 13, 1936, but then not lose a game again until May 31, 1937, which ended an amazing 24 game winning streak.
