Ted Williams entered the last day of the 1941 season with a .39955 batting average, rounding off to .400. The pennant race was already decided, and Boston manager Joe Cronin suggested that Ted sit out the Red Sox double header against the Athletics to preserve his .400 average. Williams tod Cornin, "I don't care to be known as a .400 hitter with a lousy average of .39955. I'm going to be a .400 hitter." In the first game, he hit a homer and 3 singles in 5 at-bats. In the second game, he hit a double and a single in 3 at-bats. With his 6 hits for the day, the Splendid Splinter finsihed the year with a .406 average to become the American League's first .400 hitter since Harry Heilmann in 1923.
